On March 4, Ohio Academy of Family Physicians President-Elect, Mike Sevilla, MD, FAAFP, addressed Salem, OH, community members on the dangers of adolescent tobacco use, especially the rising crisis of teen vaping. The local newspaper, The Salem News, and TV station, WKBN 27, were on hand to capture the story.
Dr. Sevilla’s presentation shared insight into the marketing tactics of vaping products to teens and provided a unique clinical perspective to help parents and grandparents stay vigilant in their anti-tobacco messaging with their teens.
Also embedded in his presentation, Dr. Sevilla shared Ohio Quit Line resources that are geared for adolescent tobacco users and he referenced an archived tobacco cessation webinar that is available on the OAFP website. (Take note, the webinar is accredited for 1 Prescribed continuing medical education credit by the American Academy of Family Physicians for family physicians and members of their care teams.)
Dr. Sevilla’s public outreach is a shining example of the important role family physicians play in the lives of their patients and their communities. If you, a partner, or member of your care team is working in a unique way to spread the message of family medicine in your community, we want to hear about it.
