The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians has nominated Kathleen “Kelly” Meehan-de la Cruz, MD, for appointment to the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Commission on Health of the Public and Science, the AAFP Commission on Governmental Advocacy, or the AAFP Commission on Membership and Member Services.
Dr. Meehan-de la Cruz served as a member constituencies delegate to the 2018 AAFP Congress of Delegates in New Orleans where she was appointed coordinator of the member constituencies caucus; she also served as a co-convener for the 2018 National Conference of Constituency Leaders (NCCL). She served as member constituencies alternate delegate at the 2017 AAFP Congress of Delegates in San Antonio; and she served as co-convener for the 2014 National Conference of Special Constituencies. A regular NCCL attendee, Dr. Meehan-de la Cruz has a deep knowledge of the AAFP’s scope of work and is fully committed to continuing the high quality, leadership training that NCCL and Annual Chapter Leader Forum provide to AAFP members that affords them the confidence and knowledge to better serve patients and colleagues.
Dr. Meehan-de la Cruz is active in the Ohio chapter where she serves on the OAFP Board of Directors as vice speaker, and as a member of the Public Policy Committee, the Finance/Audit Committee, the Member Constituencies Workgroup, and the National Action Committee.
In his letter of chapter support, OAFP President Stan Anderson, MD, stated, “As member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) constituency, Dr. Meehan-de la Cruz has unique knowledge of the health needs and the burdens of health inequity that face incarcerated persons and those in the LGBT community.”
Dr, Anderson went on to say, “Her practice experience with underserved patients and immigrant patients make her acutely aware of the impact social determinants have on health care.”
Dr. Meehan-de la Cruz earned her medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed residency at the University of Massachusetts Fitchburg Family Medicine Residency Program in Fitchburg, MA.
