The Opioid Response Network (ORN), a national partner of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), has created a free training video for physicians and their care teams to enhance knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues especially as they impact people on the continuum of care for substance use disorder. This training, Developing a Shared Language For Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, is an opportunity to reflect on ways to create more welcoming and inclusive places for staff, patients, as well as ways healthcare organizations can support DEI efforts.
- Review baseline language to ground us in a shared understanding of DEI issues
- Explore equity data on the impact of DEI issues on health care access, experiences, and outcomes
- Unpack myths about DEI and those impacted by these issues
- Review situational examples and their implications for opioid and substance use disorder.
In an extended effort to bridge the gap between opioid stewardship and chronic pain management, the AAFP, has developed a new Chronic Pain Toolkit dedicated to educating physicians on the effective assessment, diagnosis, and management of chronic pain.
The toolkit, developed by the AAFP with partial funding from a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHA) grant, provides an assortment of evidence-based items to aid in heling family physician and other primary care clinicians approach pain management in a multidimensional, patient-centered and goal-oriented manner.
Whether you seek understanding through DEI training or access to point of care tools, sharpening your skills will provide better health outcomes for your patients on the recovery and rehabilitation continuum.
