For many clinicians, the work of health care has become undoable. The “cockpit” where physicians and other health professionals work now consists of a cacophony of warning alerts, pop-up messages, mandatory check boxes, a Sisyphean inbox, and maddening documentation. Paradoxically, many interventions intended to improve quality, safety, or value, when taken in totality, may in fact contribute to health system dysfunction by virtue of the cumulative impact on workload and consequent burnout.
Join us for the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians’ upcoming Wellness Wednesdays webinar on Wednesday, August 21, from 12:15 – 1 p.m. EST and hear from expert speaker Christine Sinsky, MD, vice president of professional satisfaction at the American Medical Association (AMA).
Dr. Sinsky has worked to elevate national awareness of health professional well-being as an important driver of health system performance. In 2012 she led “In Search of Joy in Practice: A Report of 23 High-Functioning Primary Care Practices.” With a colleague, she introduced the framework of the “Quadruple Aim” in 2013 as a health system goal. At the AMA, she leads the development of initiatives to improve clinician well-being, working on research, policy, technology, and educational fronts to increase the opportunities for joy, purpose, and meaning in work.
During the webinar, Dr. Sinsky will discuss the science supporting the quality, safety, and business cases for focusing on creating a manageable cockpit for clinicians. She will also describe practical leadership, workflow, and teamwork interventions that can improve professional satisfaction and reduce burnout.
- Articulate the business case for addressing physician well-being
- Bring home at least one change to improve efficiency in your own practice and
- Become inspired about the possibilities of reclaiming the joy in medicine.
