The next session of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians’ (OAFP) Bite-Sized Learning session is set for Sunday, February 28, at 8 p.m. This week’s session is titled “Emerging Leader Institute Project: Results are In.” Members can join the conversation by logging on to the OAFP’s Facebook page or YouTube channel to watch live.
Moderated by OAFP President Mike Sevilla, MD, this session will feature Jacob Brock, a medical student at the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and participant of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Foundation’s Family Medicine Leads (FML) Emerging Leader Institute. Mr. Brock joined our Bite-Sized session in October 2020 to share more about his plans for his project and to ask physicians to complete his survey. During this session, his mentor, Beth Oller, MD, will join the discussion as they share the project’s results.
“This project is centered around the issues associated with family physician burnout. This project began with a focus on the practicality of sabbatical leave or “leave of absence” for physicians experiencing burnout but developed to include EMRs and Direct Primary Care (DPC). Attitudes of family physicians towards this type of leave was assessed and the logistical challenges were analyzed such as financial, patient coverage, and employment assurance. In addition, upcoming developments in EMRs to reduce clerical burden on family physicians were explored. Lastly, the obstacles and practicality of DPC were discussed with experts in the field. The goal of this presentation is to openly present and discuss these potential solutions to reducing rates of burnout in family physicians.”
The FML Emerging Leader Institute focuses on ensuring the future of the specialty by increasing the number of future family medicine leaders and provides training for this important role. Thirty residents and students are selected to participate in the yearlong program. They each are paired with a family physician mentor and complete a project in one of three leadership tracks: Policy & Public Health, Personal & Practice, or Philanthropic & Mission-Driven.
The FML Emerging Leader Institute application period is currently open for the next cohort of students and residents. The deadline to apply is Monday, March 15. For more information and to apply, visit the AAFP Foundation website.
