On June 14, State Representative Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green, OH) introduced House Bill 273, a proposal that would prohibit a physician from being required to secure a maintenance of certification as a condition of obtaining licensure, reimbursement, or employment or obtaining admitting privileges or surgical privileges at a hospital or health care facility.
The bill has not yet been assigned to a committee.
Maintainance of certification has just become a money making tool for the certification board. It just cost a lot to go through the process without any real knowledge benefit. CME requirements to maintain licensure helps to keep up to date with the current knowledge.
Certification should remain a must to attain the level of knowledge required to perform in the field an individual is working. But recertification should be scrapped as provides no value for best performance in your individual practices.
