In partnership with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and a professional diversity speaker, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) has created the highly interactive, virtual program Building Cultural Intelligence to Breakdown Racism set for Wednesday, September 30. Robin Shabazz, Esq., of The Eastledge Group located in Cincinnati, OH, will serve as the principal and lead cultural facilitator.
AAFP President Gary LeRoy, MD, FAAFP, and Danielle Jones, MPH, director of the AAFP Center for Diversity and Health Equity, will lead the “Racism as a Public Health Crisis” session of the program. The powerful statement attributed to Dr. LeRoy, “The elimination of health disparities will not be achieved without first acknowledging racism’s contribution to health and social inequalities,” is part and parcel to the AAFP’s “racism as a public health crisis” declaration. During this session, participants will gain an understanding of how these foundational principles shape AAFP policy and serve as a call to action for patients and Academy members.
The event will provide physicians and other health care professionals an opportunity to have conversations about racism by reflecting on gaps in awareness of cultures, traditions, and ethnicities, and then take powerful steps toward personal improvement. The sessions will include interactive breakouts and small group discussions, and will not only address racism as a public health crisis, but also systematically train participants to improve their cultural intelligence.

Continuing Medical Education
This Live activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 4.5 live Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Additionally, this initiative is perfectly timed to coordinate with the launch of the ABFM’s new Health Disparities/Equity Self-Directed Clinical Performance Improvement activity. Participants in our Building Cultural Intelligence to Breakdown Racism program can put their knowledge into practice and make it count for ABFM credit!
Book Club
After the conclusion of the program, participants will be invited to keep the conversation moving forward by opting into the OAFP’s first ever Racial Equity Book Club. The club will meet monthly during a weeknight via Zoom. A physician volunteer will facilitate the discussion by using guided questions to help readers share their personal reflections of the book being reviewed. Additional details and the reading list are available on the OAFP website.
