Recently, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) provided recommendations and input to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on proposed revisions of the Opioid Prescribing Guidelines.
The Academy applauded the CDC for addressing issues in the 2016 iteration that resulted in overly restrictive policies for physicians by insurers, regulatory boards, pharmacy chains, hospital systems, and other stakeholders. The AAFP also recommended that the CDC provide clarity around the evidence base for different categories of recommendations and increase the utility of the guidelines by streamlining the document and providing a table of major changes.
