2024 Resident Leadership Award Recipient:

Alexandra Burnett, MD, MHS

The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) is pleased to announce that Alexandra Burnett, MD, MHS, has been selected to receive its 2024 Resident Leadership Award.

The OAFP presents the Resident Leadership Award to an individual who has exhibited leadership and shows dedication to promoting family medicine, practices a high degree of professionalism, and possess immense promise as a family physician.

Dr. Burnett earned both her Masters in Health Science and her medical degree from the Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. She matched to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) Family Medicine Residency Program in Columbus, OH, and recently served as chief resident during the 2023-24 academic year.

“I was drawn to family medicine because I wanted to serve my community and work to address health disparities in access to care,” said Dr. Burnett.

She was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and has participated in the American Medical Association and the University of Cincinnati Resident Diversity Leadership Program and the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Chief Resident Leadership Development Program; building a national network of physician colleagues and gaining leadership competencies and tools.

In addition to these leadership programs, Dr. Burnett has also served on numerous committees for her residency program including, but not limited to, the Practice Management Committee; Program Evaluation Committee; the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee; and the Recruitment Committee.

Dr. Burnett also volunteers for the Mid-Ohio Food bank and is a mentor in a program through OSUWMC that creates a network of support and encouragement between medical students who identify as underrepresented minorities (URM) in medicine and residents from both OSUWMC and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

“I am a firm believer that an invaluable part of my medical journey has been the mentorship and guidance I have received along the way,” said Dr. Burnett. “I have an unwavering commitment to providing support for URM medical students and undergraduates. I have used my time in residency to develop recruitment strategies aimed at increasing the number of URM residents in our family medicine program.”

Bethany Panchal, MD, FAAFP, director of Ohio State’s Family Medicine Residency Program and Dr. Burnett’s award nominator, expressed that her leadership within the program has positively impacted its success. “It has been such a pleasure working with Dr. Burnett and I am excited for her future, having been accepted into the Adolescent Medicine Fellowship at the University of Michigan for this upcoming academic year.”

Dr. Burnett’s areas of interest in family medicine include academic medicine, reproductive health, and sexual health. “The Adolescent Medicine Fellowship allows me to combine these interests while providing primary care to vulnerable communities and empowering adolescents to make critical decisions regarding their healthcare.”

The OAFP congratulates Dr. Burnett for this recognition as the Resident Leadership Award recipient and wishes her success in the next steps of her family medicine journey.
