As we look into our past, sometimes it can be a reminder of where we’ve been and the future possibilities that are still yet to come. To help commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians, founded in 1948, we have launched the “Cheers to 70 Years” campaign. This year-long campaign highlights the history and future of family medicine and we want all of our members to be involved!
Originally founded as the Ohio Academy of General Practice, we were created to maintain the highest-quality standards for family physicians who were providing comprehensive health care to the public. Ohio was among the first, and still is today, considered one of the largest and strongest chapters in the nation.
Every member who joins the OAFP brings different experiences and reasons for why they choose or decide to practice family medicine. From the aspiring medical student who hopes to one day open their own practice to the experienced family physician paving the way, the OAFP serves to lead, advocate, and advance family medicine and health care for all Ohioans.
To learn more about the impact of family medicine, read the personal stories of how our family physician, family medicine resident, and medical student members found their inspiration on the “Family Medicine Stories” page. And, take a trip down memory lane by clicking through our historical timeline dating back to the late 1940s on the “Our History” page. From the first scientific assembly to our first board exams, you will be surprised how much health care has changed in the last 70 years in Ohio.
Also, to celebrate this milestone year, we are thrilled to host 2018 Family Medicine Celebration, in a new location in Grandview Heights, OH. We will celebrate not only this year’s accomplishments, but also connect with friends, old and new.
If you’re not a member of the OAFP, get to know us by visiting the “About Us” page where we highlight our core values and guiding principles as to what has brought us here today and where we hope to be in the future.
You’re invited and we hope you celebrate with us all year-long!
Community Service Challenge
This year, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians staff will be volunteering 70 hours of community service to help commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Academy. All-year-long, the OAFP staff will be participating in volunteer activities that will give back to individuals and families in Central Ohio.
We are challenging all OAFP members to commit to 70 hours of community service, whether that is individually or with your practice staff. If every OAFP member completed 70 hours of service, there would be 350,000 hours of service donated, along with hundreds, and potentially thousands, of lives touched across the state.
To provide a little motivation, we will be tracking the hours served and highlighting those experiences on the OAFP website, in the WFMU, and in The Ohio Family Physician. We are extremely excited to see our members get involved! To help us track the hours served, please complete and submit a volunteer form, a synopsis of your experience (250 words or more), and a photo to Communications Manager Morgan Pelt.
Forms can be submitted up till the end of the year. Watch our progress through articles in the Weekly Family Medicine Update and if you have any questions, please contact Morgan Pelt or call 800.742.7327.
