Update to Allowable Charges for Copying Medical Records for 2010

Ohio Department of Health (ODH) has released updated amounts that health care providers can charge for copying medical records in 2010.

The Ohio Revised Code requires that ODH use the Consumer Price Index to determine the amount of increase or decrease in costs for providing medical records. The decrease for 2010 is a -0.36 percent decrease from 2009.

The following are amounts hospitals and companies can charge for copying medical records in 2010:

  • $2.83 per page for the first 10 pages
  • $0.59 per page for pages 11-50
  • $0.24 cents per page for pages 51 and over

With respect to data recorded on something other than paper, the maximum charge is $1.93 per page.

If the request is made by an entity other than the patient or the patient’s personal representative, total costs for copies and all services related to those copies shall not exceed the sum of the following:

  • An initial fee, which compensates for the records search: $17.42
  • $1.15 per page for the first 10 pages
  • $0.59 for pages 11-50
  • $0.24 for pages 51 and over

These fees are effective for 2010.
