Established in 1976, our residency program has a strong tradition of producing well-trained family physicians for any setting. We are based in a 550-bed community hospital, The Christ Hospital. The Christ Hospital is the winner of the Cincinnati's 2007 Consumer Choice Award—an award it has received for 12 consecutive years. A full range of inpatient adult medicine is taught by family medicine faculty, including geriatricians, working at The Christ Hospital. Our obstetrics experience at The Christ Hospital is multidisciplinary. We work closely with family physicians, obstetricians, maternal/fetal medicine specialists, a nurse midwife, pediatricians and neonatologists. We utilize the tertiary care settings of the University Hospital and The Christ Hospital (both of which have been ranked among the top hospitals by the US News and World Report) for training in emergency care, intensive care, newborn care and subspecialty clinics. Pediatrics is undertaken at one of the nation's most renowned hospitals, Cincinnati Children's, which is ranked fifth in the nation. Multiple community electives such as alternative medicine, sports medicine and geriatrics are available. Patients in our outpatient center in Forest Park are from all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. Many residents and faculty work with underserved populations in the community. Residents can tailor their training as they anticipate their future practice settings and career goals.

Our program is well-known nationally for its longitudinal International Health Track. Residents participate in weekly didactics and funded-yearly trips to Honduras or Brazil. Third-year residents may design an international elective to a site of their choosing. We offer a five-year combined family medicine/psychiatry program; these residents are eligible upon graduation for board certification in both specialties. We also offer residents an Underserved Track that provides training in a community health center and other underserved settings. Our Geriatrics Fellowship focuses clinical and research training on the special needs of our growing elderly population.

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package which includes a moving allowance of $2,000 and mileage reimbursement for travel to the family medicine center. Among our many highly skilled, experienced faculty, we have the 2006 AAFP Exemplary Teaching Award winner Dr. Phil Diller, our residency director. We also boast of the Cincinnati Business Courier's 2007 Community Outreach Health Care Hero Dr. Joe Kiesler, our associate residency director.

residency@cmhregional.com

The Family Medicine Residency Program of Clinton Memorial Hospital (CMH) Regional Health System combines the resources of a major teaching facility with the appealing environment of a small-town hospital. The program, which is affiliated with the University of Cincinnati, is committed to training superior residents who want to make a difference in a smaller community.

Clinton Memorial Hospital is a regional teaching hospital with state-of-the-art electronic medical records; a new regional cancer center; a spacious and modern outpatient family health center that houses the residency program and a recently renovated and expanded hospital. Its unopposed residency program assures a great deal of experience and responsibility for our family medicine residents. Being a part of a smaller health system allows us to get to know our residents quickly and intimately.

Clinton County, Ohio, serves as the model community for learning family medicine in a small town. In his book, The 100 Best Small Towns in America: A Nationwide Guide to the Best in Small Town Living, Norman Crampaton listed Wilmington as the best small town in Ohio. In 1995, Cincinnati Magazine rated Wilmington as the most livable neighborhood in the greater Cincinnati area.

Many say that Wilmington is the kind of town they would like their children to grow up in. You are more than welcome to find out why.

We train residents to accept their roles as concerned, competent physicians who function well in the full realm of family medicine, whether in rural, suburban or urban settings. We provide a rich blend of experiences, with representation from a broad range of age, socioeconomic, racial and ethnic groups.

A variety of medical disciplines complement this comprehensive exposure. Our program assists residents in achieving:

  • Technical competence in the diagnosis and management of common illnesses that constitute the majority of health visits to family physicians.
  • Development of a process of diagnosis and treatment that considers the professional limits of family medicine and recognizes the need for timely, competent consultation or referral.
  • Implementation of the biopsychosocial model as a means of understanding, and therefore treating, the "whole" patient.

We pride ourselves in having flexibility in the curriculum to maximize the individual resident's specific needs or desires.

Western Reserve Health System FPR

Forum Family Practice Residency
500 Gypsy Lane
Youngstown, OH 44501
330-740-3983
888-800-2074

Forum Family Practice Residency Program was founded in 1979. There are four residents each year. We serve a population of about 250,000, yet do not have the congestion of a large city. As a major teaching hospital for Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM), we enjoy the resources of a medical school with a class size of 100 students. Our program fosters resident independence coupled with a strong program of practice management skills. A number of our graduates have successfully started private practices, quickly enjoying success.

WRCS has been involved in post-graduate training since the turn of the century. WRCS is a not-for-profit hospital whose primary mission is patient care and medical education. There is still a strong commitment to medical education after 90 years. This is evidenced by the hospital maintaining residencies for family medicine, internal medicine, medicine/pediatrics, surgery, podiatry, pediatrics, pathology and dentistry. Training associations also exist with numerous other paramedical training programs. There are five other family medicine residency programs associated with NEOUCOM. The directors meet together monthly and work jointly on projects. These features lead to a nicely balanced offering of broad academic resources in a personal and supportive environment.

OSU Oakhill Rural FPR

Mad River Family Practice

4879 US Route 68 South
West Liberty, OH 43357
937-465-0080
residency@madriverfamilypractice.org
http://www.madriverfamilypractice.org

The Ohio State University Rural Program combines the best of two worlds: the excellence of academic family medicine and the real-world relevance of rural family practice. Anchored in Logan County for all three years, this "practice with a residency" in the rural community and hospital is punctuated by intermittent immersion experiences in the tertiary hospital context.

Two residents per year are accepted into this integrated "2-2-2" rural training track affiliated with The Ohio State University. In comparison with training in the city, the educational setting offered in Logan County more closely resembles that which a physician would expect to experience in subsequent rural practice.

Unique aspects of the program include a high-volume continuity OB practice; experienced rural faculty, following a mentoring model of postgraduate education adapted to individual learning needs; and a high volume of procedures integrated into a real-life practice. In a weekly trans-disciplinary small group experience, called "Clinical Jazz," attention is focused on the doctor-patient relationship and its central importance in clinical practice.

The field of family medicine has always been fostered and strongly supported in central Ohio by the Mount Carmel Health System. As a leader in the field of primary care and tertiary medical care, Mount Carmel has provided a strong and academically based family medicine residency program since 1975. This program has produced a diverse group of family physicians, who are leaders in the medical field throughout Ohio and the United States. These graduates practice in many diverse settings, including private physician offices, emergency rooms, urgent care centers, hospital-based offices and federally qualified health facilities located in urban, rural and suburban environments. Over 75 percent of our graduates remain on staff with the Mount Carmel Health System after graduation from our program.

The Mount Carmel Family Medicine Residency Program is a comprehensive three-year, fully accredited program designed to educate family physicians to provide a broad range of primary care services for patients from infancy through geriatrics. Our residents have extensive training opportunities at several central Ohio hospitals, including Mount Carmel West, Mount Carmel St. Ann's and Columbus Children's Hospital. Our residents also receive comprehensive ambulatory-based training in our state-of-the-art outpatient facilities. Our family medicine residency focuses on educating family physicians in the full spectrum of patient care. Our residents receive expert instruction in major medical procedures, a steady diet of workshops, lectures, rounds and opportunities to do research and explore special interests in a comprehensive program that prepares them well for family medicine. This diverse and challenging experience gives our residents the opportunity to perfect their clinical skills, learn and enhance their ambulatory procedure skills, and develop a strong business foundation to ensure success in the field of family medicine.

In addition to a comprehensive curriculum, the residency features an expert and friendly faculty, dozens of unique training opportunities, commitment to community service, exposure to emerging technologies, attractive benefits package, abundant resident input and family-like atmosphere unlike other programs of its kind.

At Mount Carmel, we also emphasize community service by giving our residents opportunities to help underserved patients in the Columbus area while further developing their patient care and interaction skills. An exceptional family medicine education and advanced medical training is not all our residents get from their Mount Carmel residency. They also learn the ins and outs of how to manage their future practice and are exposed to information technologies that simplify the business of modern medicine.

In our program, residents learn from and work with a knowledgeable, friendly and approachable faculty. Whether discussing a clinical dilemma, obtaining advice on career planning or just sharing a friendly chat, our faculty shows its support for resident education and development in innumerable ways.

All other considerations aside, the family-like atmosphere at Mount Carmel is what sets our family medicine program apart. Each person's views are heard and considered in the decision making that shapes the program and as a result, provides our residents with an ownership share and a sense of pride in its ongoing success.

You will be part of an ever-changing, growing family - the first and only family medicine residency offering you a choice of four tracks for your professional and personal development: university-based, rural, urban and academic. Take a look and see why you should choose OSU.

Our program is the first and only family medicine residency offering four tracks for your professional and personal development.

Our university-based family medicine program emphasizes traditional family medicine through specialty rotations at OSU Medical Center, a nationally-ranked, academic medical center. Our inpatient service at University Hospital East allows family medicine residents to develop their clinical and technical skills in a supportive environment that fosters personal and professional development. Residents will follow continuity outpatients at the Rardin Family Practice Center, where faculty and community family physicians mentor and teach our residents in the office setting.

Our Rural Family Medicine Program is housed at the Mad River Family Practice in Bellefontaine, Ohio, located about one hour's drive from Columbus, Ohio, in Logan County. Rural Family Medicine residents complete their three years of residency at this practice site. They share rotations with the university-based program at the OSU Medical Center and participate in many educational activities with residents from all tracks. Residents experience the best of both worlds - cutting edge family medicine and the reality of rural practice.

Our Urban Family Medicine Program, housed at the OSU Family Medicine at University Hospitals East, is located in an "empowerment zone." Family medicine residents in the urban track experience a curriculum designed to prepare them for life as an urban family physician and see outpatients at University Hospitals East.

Our Academic Track prepares family medicine residents for a career in academic family medicine with a focus on teaching, leadership and scholarship/research. This track is designed to lead to a post graduate M.P.H. or M.B.A. degree.

Upon graduation from the Riverside Family Practice Residency, you will have confidence in your ability to practice in the ever-changing world of medicine and the specialty of family medicine.

The first-year class enrolls seven residents per year with two positions for the dual Family Medicine/Psychiatry program. Over 120 graduates have established successful careers in academics, urban and suburban family practices.

There are many reasons to consider the University of Toledo (UT) Family Medicine Residency as a place where you can meet your educational goals.

  • Multiple training sites: Residents have opportunities for training at urban and rural community hospitals in addition to the University Medical Center. This provides a broader range of experiences and opportunities.
  • Large, well-equipped family medicine centerIncoming residents are assigned a panel of patients/families that they serve as their continuity physicians during their three years of training. Learn common family medicine procedures, including flexible sigmoidoscopy, colposcopy, exercise stress testing, vasectomy and obstetric ultrasound.
  • Faculty that is talented and diverse: Faculty actively participates in teaching but also allows appropriate independence and opportunities for growth.
  • Longitudinal curricula: Exceptionally strong nutrition, behavioral science and practice management curricula are taught longitudinally. Residents also participate in a computerized medical informatics curriculum.
  • Research opportunities: Clinical research opportunities are available to interested residents. Our growing research division, whose director is internationally known, is developing a primary care network to conduct evidence-based research in area physicians’ offices. Current topics include diabetes mellitus, hypertension, injury prevention in the elderly and depression.
  • Access to many activities found in major metropolitan areas without the hassles of big city life. The Toledo area has a population of half a million people and offers a diverse range of activities including:
    • The world-class Toledo Museum of Art (ranked in the Top 10 in the United States).
    • Mud Hens baseball, a AAA farm team for the Detroit Tigers.
    • Toledo Storm hockey, an affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings.
    • An excellent metro park system.
    • The Toledo Zoo, recognized as one of the Top 10 zoos of its size in the country.
    • Three local universities and colleges, including the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University.
    • Local theatre groups, The Toledo Symphony Orchestra and The Toledo Opera Association.
    • Access to more than 20 golf courses and a venue for the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA).
    • An hour away from Cedar Point, ranked #1 in the world for roller coasters.
