As a member of OAFP, medical students have the opportunity to participate in OAFP activities including the Family Medicine Student Retreat, among others; participate in discussions with peers in special interest listservs; network with the family physician community; and receive OAFP publications.

In addition, leadership opportunities for medical students exist to contribute to OAFP’s work to better serve Ohio’s medical students. The following position descriptions and requirements describe these leadership opportunities.

Chair and Vice Chair of the Student Affairs Committee
Term: One year
Position Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, prepare agendas and lead approximately three meetings of the OAFP Student Affairs Committee per year, held either by conference call or at the OAFP office in Columbus.
  • Maintain contact with Ohio's family medicine interest groups (FMIG) and officers.
  • Continue relations with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) student leadership, especially the AAFP FMIG Network national coordinator and regional coordinator for the Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania region.
  • Facilitate communication with Ohio's medical students through the OAFP student listserv, The Ohio Family Physician and other communication vehicles.
  • Helps plan the annual OAFP Student Retreat, which takes place each spring.
  • Serve as the student representatives to the OAFP Board of Directors to report on Student Affairs Committee activities and provide a student perspective to board issues. This includes attendance at three to four board meetings in Columbus.
  • Participate in an in-person meeting or conference call following the retreat both as an orientation and as a review of the previous leadership's term for the newly elected OAFP student leadership. The OAFP student leadership from the previous term will lead this meeting.
Requirements:
  • Candidate must have participated in two OAFP activities prior to being elected (acceptable activities include participation in an in-person meeting or by conference call of the Student Affairs Committee).
  • Candidate must be an OAFP member to participate in nominations or elections.
  • Self-nominations accepted.
  • Candidates must submit materials for a candidate packet, including a CV (two-page maximum) and a one-page letter of interest.

Elections held annually at the Family Medicine Student Retreat.


Student Delegates to the OAFP Members Assembly
Term: One year

The Student Affairs Committee will select five student delegates to represent the student membership constituency at the OAFP Members Assembly held each August.

All delegates will have full-floor privileges, including voting, at the OAFP Members Assembly. All delegates are required to attend the Members Assembly to hear discussion on a variety of issues. Delegates also may be selected to serve on reference committees where resolutions are discussed in detail before being voted upon by the Members Assembly. Delegates have the opportunity to vote on each issue with input from other attendees from the student constituency. All delegates are encouraged to prepare summary reports of their experiences to be presented at the Student Affairs Committee meeting in the fall.

In addition to attending the OAFP Members Assembly, the delegate and alternate delegate are assumed to be part of the OAFP student leadership and will be encouraged to assist the co-chairs of the Student Affairs Committee if called upon.

The OAFP student leadership from the previous term will lead this meeting.

  • Must submit a report regarding the OAFP Members Assembly for other medical students and must submit an expense report from the meeting within 30 days to be reimbursed by OAFP for mileage.
  • Candidates must submit materials for a candidate packet, including a CV (two-page maximum) and a one-page letter of interest.

Delegate and Alternate Delegate: AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students Delegate and Alternate Delegate
(both positions are reimbursed according to the OAFP reimbursement policy)

Requirements:

  • Must be an OAFP member.
  • Must have participated in two OAFP activities prior to being elected.
  • Must submit a report regarding the conference and must submit an expense report from the meeting within 30 days to be reimbursed by OAFP.
  • Candidates must submit materials for a candidate packet, including a CV (two-page maximum) and a one-page letter of interest.
