Teleconference Overview:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disorder in which airflow is limited in a way that is not fully reversible and in the United States, COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in people over age 45. The symptoms of COPD are similar to those of asthma and other pulmonary diseases, making diagnosis challenging.
COPD has emerged as an enormous public health problem that can be addressed only with public health awareness, improved delivery of care and effective therapies. The family physician is uniquely positioned as the point of first contact for COPD patients. It is crucial that they have a fundamental working knowledge of the disease and ways to treat it. New guidelines, summarized and reviewed here, have been published and provide an excellent framework for diagnosing and managing COPD.
