Planned by the OAFP Student Affairs Committee, the Family Medicine Student Retreat serves as a forum for students to network with others interested in family medicine while gaining exposure to speakers, topics and procedural skills that they might not have access to during medical school or residency training.

The 2010 Family Medicine Student Retreat will be held on Saturday, April 17, at Embassy Suites Columbus - Dublin located at 5100 Upper Metro Place, Dublin, OH 43017.

Saturday, April 17
8:30 - 9:00 a.m. Student Retreat Registration
9:00 - 9:30 a.m. Welcome, Introductions & Program Description
9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Round Robin Learning Fair with Chief Residents from Ohio's Allopathic Residency Programs
(Four 20-minute sessions with rotating discussion topics)

11:00 a.m. - Noon Patient-centered Medical Home
Family physicians have always known the value of a medical home, even when there was no term to describe it. Now, others in the medical world are recognizing that medical homes may be the key to getting better value from the U.S. health care system. This old-fashioned yet thoroughly modern blend of personalized, comprehensive care that family physicians have been offering for decades will be discussed along with how coordinated care that capitalizes on new technology helps patients make sense of the increasingly complex healthcare system.

2:00 p.m. - 3 p.m. A Week In the Life of a Family Physician
A panel of three practicing physicians will share what type of procedures and patients they encounter in a week in their practices and how they balance their personal life with the demands of their work.

Panelists: Ryan Kauffman, M.D., Sherri Morgan, M.D., M.P.H., and Lora Sorg, M.D.

5:00 p.m. Dinner and Keynote Speaker: Caring Across Cultures
Family physicians have the opportunity to discover countries all over the world by participating in mission work. A doctor shares her experiences of mission work across the globe.
