The Need for Practice Improvement:
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that 153,760 new cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in 2007—nearly one-third of those patients will die.

Many of these cases are preventable if detected early through screenings that are motivated by their physician. You can make the difference!

How the Program Works:
Seven practices will be selected to participate in a day-and-a-half program to customize an office protocol to properly identify patients at risk for colorectal cancer, and when to recommend appropriate screening. The session will incorporate core office personnel including front office staff, billing managers, nurses and physicians. The objective is to streamline the referral or procedural process that improves patient care, while increasing physician payment and office efficiency. This project will help satisfy Part IV requirements for the Maintenance of Certification for Family Physicians (MC-FP) through the American Board of Family Medicine's (ABFM) Comprehensive Care Module. Application for Prescribed credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.

Participating Practices will Receive:

  • A modest stipend for time away from the practice to attend the conference;
  • Registration fees, meals and program materials provided free of charge for all participants;
  • Hotel accommodations and travel reimbursement for all participants;
  • A personalized step-by-step action plan on how to incorporate colorectal cancer screening services into practice, including instruction on how to capture improvement data;
  • Continuing medical education credit for physicians and nursing staff as well as MC-FP data for AFBM Part IV Module for Comprehensive Care;
  • Pre- and post-program assistance in data collection and capturing screening referral rate increases;
  • Valuable bonding time between all participating physicians and office staff!

Funding was made possible (in part) by (grant or cooperative agreement #CSP906308) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Additional educational grants have been provided by the American Cancer Society, Ohio Division.
