After spending 20 years as founding partner and president of a five-physician family medicine practice, Ken Bertka, M.D., recently assumed the position of chief medical information officer for Toledo, Ohio-based Mercy Health Partners, where he continues to see patients. In addition, Dr. Bertka is co-editor of Core Content Review of Family Medicine. Ken's recent career path affirms his decision to commit the remainder of his professional career to re-engineering the health care system for our patients and our communities. He has already rendered his resignation as Core editor effective Oct. 1, pledging to devote the 20 hours per week he currently spends on Core to his work as an AAFP Board member. Ken's AAFP service is substantial and noteworthy. He currently chairs the AAFP Commission on Membership and Member Services. He has also served on the AAFP Chapter Affairs Committee (including one year as chair) and the AAFP Committee on Scientific Program. Additionally, he has served in various capacities on AAFP projects relating to electronic health records, medically-related computer classes and office computerization. As an Ohio Academy of Family Physicians past president and current Board member, Ken's innovative and progressive leadership at the chapter level is responsible for programs and services that generate 10 percent of OAFP's income (Core, Web site and publication advertising revenue). He continues to serve as Web site editor and has since the site's inception. Recognized with his wife, Vicki (also a family physician), for their substantial contributions to the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Community, Boy Scouts of America and family medicine, the couple was honored as AAFP Philanthropists of the Year in 2002 and OAFP Philanthropists of the Year in 2000. Ken also volunteers as a Homeland Security Ohio Citizens Corps physician, Douglas Foundation Board member and Tar Wars® presenter. Born and raised in Toledo, Ken attended the University of Toledo and medical school at the University of Cincinnati. Ken returned home to complete his family practice residency at the Medical College of Ohio/St. Vincent Medical Center where he served as chief resident. He also completed a Family Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship at Michigan State University. The Bertkas have been married since 1983. Dr. Vicki Bertka is a physician for Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Ken and Vicki have two sons: Brian, who is a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Kevin, who starts high school this fall. « Back |
