Research Grants Program
We value research that furthers our ability to offer quality healthcare. We value grassroots solutions that help create healthy communities.
Ohio Family Medicine Residency Cancer Research Scholarship Program
(Program is suspended until further notice.)
The American Cancer Society (ACS) is committed to enhancing family physicians'
involvement in the fight against cancer. The OAFP Foundation values research by
family physicians that will improve patient care. Critical to our joint endeavor
is increasing the awareness among and involvement of a younger, more diverse group
of family physicians. This collaborative scholarship program provides a unique
opportunity for Ohio family medicine residents to initiate scholarly projects
that address cancer issues.
Since 2003, ACS has awarded sixteen $1,000 grants to help fund second- and third-year family medicine residents' scholarly projects related to cancer prevention and control, early detection, treatment or quality of life. The funds are intended to offset the cost to conduct the project and are paid to the residents' institution. Projects are expected to result in a poster or oral presentation at a state-level meeting and/or in an article in an appropriate publication.
The program is currently undergoing revisions.
Research Grants Program
(Program is suspended until further notice.)
This program encourages evidence-based research in the discipline of family
medicine that may serve as a pilot study for larger projects. Proposals with
practical clinical applications for family physicians or with health policy
implications are encouraged. Intended outcomes are that the projects will lead
to publication(s), presentations(s), medical student involvement and other research
opportunities. An OAFP member must be one of the principal investigators.
From 1988 through 2002, the OAFP Foundation provided more than $196, 986 for
56 projects. Many of these have received national recognition for the researchers
and the OAFP. In several cases, these projects were essential links in a chain
of projects and grants, sharpening research ideas and giving momentum to larger
projects that impact patient care.
In 2003, the OAFP Foundation made
the decision to suspend requests for new research proposals while it seeks to
build an adequate pool of funds from which seed grants can be made. If you would
like to make a donation or a multi-year pledge in support of the Research Grant
Program, please contact OAFP/F Executive Assistant Julie Mask at jmask@oafpfoundation.org (614) 267-7867. Those interested in the Foundation's past funded
research projects or our Research
Grants Program Summary may continue to access these.
